Name Sajin Komamura
-
Age Unknown, somewhere in the region of 300 years
-
Gender Male
-
Personality Despite his wild appearance, Komamura is a loyal, brave character and extremely dedicated to his role as a Shinigami and as a Captain. He leads his squad by example rather than sanction or toughness, trusting them to follow his own ideals of courage and devotion. He is trustworthy – his allies can always rely on him to be present when he is needed. Although these qualities shine through, he is also a serious, sometimes sombre character, as he still bears the emotional scars of the torment he faced due to his appearance before he became an esteemed member of the Gotei 13. His serious attitude masks a gentle, caring one which contrasts his appearance even further. However, when he enters battle he almost takes on the persona you would expect from his appearance, becoming a destructive, raging beast as he fights to defend or protect what he believes in.
During the winter war, Komamura’s serious attitude only deepened, first due to the betrayal of Tosen Kaname, his best friend. Following that, the death of Captain-Commander Yammamoto, who took him into Soul Society, also hit him hard. He had felt an unwavering gratitude to the ancient Commander, and a bitter chill still bites at his heart over the losses that have occurred. Despite this, he is determined to remain a strong and dependable Captain and to lead his squad to the best of his abilities.
Although once possibly ashamed by his outlandish appearance (he wore a helmet for many years), he seems to have come to terms with his anthropomorphic form. He no longer wears the helmet and speaks matter-of-factly about his state when prompted. He likes dogs, for obvious reasons, and even has a pet dog, Goro, who lives in the squad seven barracks.
His personal preferences include meat over vegetables. His father once told him that carrots were ‘not for their kind’.
-
Appearance Komamura is not human in appearance, instead appearing as a huge, humanoid anthropomorphic canine. He stands at a massive 9’4’’, weighing over 650 Lbs. His build is muscular to compliment his height, making him an overall intimidating man to face, especially in battle. His fur is light brown in colour, and soft as he makes sure to comb it (using a dog brush) regularly. His eyes are of a gold colour. He has the snout and large, pointed ears of a wolf.
His uniform consists of the usual Shinigami garb – black kimono, black hakama, and white belt. He wears his sleeveless white Captain’s haori over the top. His outfit differs from here, though, as he wears large shoulder plates and heavy, plated boots over the top of his clothes, along with thick, plated gloves of the same colour as his fur.
-
Zanpakuto Spirit Tenken’s manifested spirit is a huge humanoid figure, standing at around two stories tall. He has red skin, and carries a bolas and a sword. He has shown the ability to launch jets of fire from his mouth. Although he looks greatly intimidating, he is actually shy and gentle, as is his master. He never speaks, or loses his cool. The only word he has said as of yet is ‘Bankai’, in a deep, resounding voice.
-
Sealed Zanpakuto In its sealed state, Tenken appears as a regular katana, although it is overly-sized to suit and compliment its wielders specific needs. The hilt wrap is dark purple, and the cross guard is shaped as a squared-off hourglass. He keeps the blade in its black scabbard in his belt.
-
Shikai Name: Tenken (“Heavenly Punishment”)
-
Release Phrase Unknown
-
Shikai Description Tenken’s Shikai state entails the conjuration of various disembodied limbs and body parts from thin air. These resemble that of a giant’s, as they are massive in size, and boast thick, plated armour of a grey colour.
-
Shikai Abilities These body parts are then able to fly through the air and mimic the actions of Komamura. For example, if he were to throw a punch, the massive hand would do the same, increasing the power of the blow largely. This ability creates for great offensive moves and even good defence, as the body parts can be used as shields to deflect attacks also.
-
Bankai Name: Kokujo Tengen Myo’o (“Vidyaraja of Kalasutra's Heavenly Punishment”)
-
Bankai Description The sword that Komamura holds remains the same. Both his entire body and the katana glows with a bright, powerful spirit energy. As with its Shikai, the Bankai of Tenken conjures a giant warrior, but in Bankai it conjures the entire body. It creates a massive (around 100 metres tall) samurai which stands to attention behind Komamura. It wears grey/black plated armour and a helmet, though orange skin is visible beneath. It wields a blade which has a similar cross guard to Komamura’s, but the blade itself is curved, more like a scimitar.
-
Bankai Abilities Similar to his Shikai, the samurai will copy Komamura’s movements, multiplying the power of his attacks and movements by many times. It is extremely powerful and durable, its strength proportional to its colossal stature. The major drawback of Komamura’s destructive Bankai is that any damage the giant takes is reflected onto Komamura himself.
-
Natural Shinigami Abilities
Zanjutsu: Being a Captain, Komamura is well versed in the ways of swordplay with his Zanpakuto, and makes for a devastating combatant, using his size and strength to his advantage while still displaying impressive speed. He is experienced and strong enough to hold his own against even the monstrous Kenpachi Zaraki, who is credited as being one of the strongest sword fighters in Soul Society.
Strength: His natural form, build and stature, allow for amazing physical strength. He was able to block an attack from a huge (as big as his Bankai) arrancar in resureccion form, and then throw the entire arrancar to the side using only his hands, and with apparent ease.
Hakuda: Although he relies on more blunt, brawling fighting than practised, accurate styles when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, his immense strength allows him to be a masterful warrior even without his sword.
Senses: Due to his being a anthropomorphic wolf, he has enhanced senses of sight, hearing, smell and taste.
Animal communication: He is able to talk to animals.
Reiatsu/spirit pressure: As a Captain, he has demonstrated vast amounts of spiritual pressure, which, when released, tends to obliterate the area around and under him due to sheer force. He can use the pressure as a weapon against normal enemies by blasting them with it. He is also experienced in controlling and hiding his reiatsu, as he made a habit of doing so while hiding his true nature.
Shunpo/Ho-ho: He has mastery over flash-steps, being able to use them at the standard Captain’s level.

History Little is known about Komamura’s background. He was a wanderer in Rukongai for unknown years, until the first registered time that he appeared to someone from Sereitei. He approached Kename Tosen, who was still training at the Spiritual Arts Academy at the time. Tosen sensed him nearby, but estimated that he was in the wrong direction. Only when Komamura spoke did he realize he was mistaken, and complimented Komamura on his reiatsu-concealing skills. Komamura was deeply moved by this meeting, as due to Kaname’s blindness, it was the first time his appearance didn’t force him to be seen and treated as an outcast. From that day the two of them became firm friends.
Later, Captain-Commander Yammamoto bent the rules of Soul Society to allow Komamura access into Sereitei, and to learn to become a Shinigami. Yammamoto became one of the few who knew his true form and accepted him for it, and Komamura was, and is to this day, eternally grateful and loyal to him.
In his time as a Shinigami and as a Captain Komamura concealed his face from all those around him to try and fit in, though this concealment (and his size) made him quite obvious in a crowd. He also rarely spoke, and kept to himself apart from talking to Tosen, Yammamoto and a few others.
During the time of Aizen’s rebellion against Soul Society, Komamura remained the calm, observing statue of a Captain he always was, not making any rash decisions and quietly watching events unfold until it was time to act. This time was when Kenpachi Zaraki freed the Ryoka prisoners and Komamura, along with Tosen, Iba (his Lieutenant), Shuhei (Tosen’s Lieutenant) appeared to intercept him. By doing this he was acting in the defence of Yammamoto. At the time he was unaware that Tosen was secretly siding with Aizen. Zaraki faced off against Tosen, eventually defeating him, and was about to deliver the killing blow when Komamura stepped in, blocking the attack. As a result, his helmet crumbled away and for the first time all those around him (apart from Tosen) could see what he truly looked like.
Upon sensing the release of Yammamoto’s Shikai, Komamura abandoned the battle with Zaraki and rushed off to aid him. When he was half-way there, the message reached him of Aizen’s betrayal, and he changed directions, heading to Sokyoku Hill to confront the true traitor amongst them.
Arriving there he found Aizen, and immediately made to attack him, only for Aizen to block the attack. Aizen calmly noted that it had been some time since he had seen Komamura’s face, and Komamura responded by yelling at him for smiling under the circumstances. He then attacked once again, and this time Aizen was forced to dodge the move. He then turned to Tosen, asking him why and how he could betray Soul Society, and, in anger, made to release his Bankai. Unfortunately, he was caught under the complete hypnosis of Aizen’s Zanpakuto and left open for a level 90 Kido spell – Black Coffin – which Aizen performed on him, lacerating his body and leaving him gravely injured. He next comes back into conciousness as Tosen, Ichimaru and Aizen are leaving to Heuco Mundo, and he asks Tosen about what he was doing – not following true justice, to which Tosen responds that he is following justice.
After recovering from his injuries, he converses with Shuhei atop the hill that had been a special place for Tosen, and he told Shuhei that no matter what, they would open his eyes to the truth.
The next time he came face to face with the enemy was at the battle of Fake Karakura. Since he was not one of the Captains sent to Heuco Mundo, he instead journeyed to the copy of Karakura town to fight the traitors and the top three Espada (and their various Fraccion). He observed the beginning of the fight, and then took it upon himself to step in, aiding Ikkaku who had fallen at the hand of one of Barragan Luisenbarn’s Fraccion. Releasing his Bankai, he made short work of the massive Resureccion form.
After finishing off the enemy, Komamura overheard Ikkaku talking about how he didn’t use his Bankai because he wanted to keep it hidden from others. Although Komamura heard this (to Ikkaku and Iba’s alarm), he noted that he had ‘something in [his] ear’. This means he heard it, but was willing to keep the secret.
After the defeat of the rest of Barragan’s Fraccion, Komamura stood to protect the injured Shinigami while they were being healed, watching the ongoing battle up above. At the revelation of the massive Hollow creature, Izuru Kira advised him to go and join the battle, since he was needed there more than with the injured.
He jumped into the battle, blocking an attack from Tosen that was aimed at Shinji Hirako, and Komamura told Shinji that he was there to help and would not take no as an answer. Hisagi then shortly appeared and expressed that he wished to fight also. The two of them were taken aback when Tosen revealed his newfound ability to go into a hollowfied form, Komamura asking how he could ‘fall so low’. As Tosen began to block Komamura’s enraged blows, Komamura asked him how he could have become so corrupt, and spoke to try and tempt him back to the side of good. Unfortunately, Tosen was dedicated to what he believed to be true justice, and the battle quickly erupted to a new level. Komamura attacked with his Bankai, to little effect, and Komamura realized that, for the sake of Soul Society, he had to strike Tosen down. Tosen then releaseed a further evolved, Resureccion form, and attacked. It looked as if the end was near for Komamura, but Shuhei intercepted at the last moment, slicing into Tosen’s head and delivering a fatal blow. Komamura shared a crushed and bitter goodbye with his former best friend, before turning his attentions to Aizen, roaring bestially at him as he felt that the entire thing was his fault.

Komamura opened his eyes.
For three minutes, which he counted inside his head, he laid still, simply staring at the bland wooden ceiling above him. His large, pointed ears twitched as he picked up on the sounds of the birds outside, which were twittering serenely in the morning sun. The Captain sniffed the air lazily – the smell of spring, and the dewdrops on the roofs outside.
Taking a deep breath into his huge lungs, he heaved himself to his feet, so that he stood and stretched in his quarters of the Squad Seven barracks. His spine and arms cracked satisfactorily as he stretched, and then he let his arms drop to his sides and made to wander outside.
He didn’t really know where he was heading this early in the morning, he just felt the need to be outside and basking in the fresh sunlight. He figured that it might have been the animalistic blood in him that wanted to be in more open spaces, to feel free and unrestrained by the walls of the barracks.
He stepped out into the morning light, and peered around with his golden eyes, taking in the white and wooden buildings, the clear pathways around him. He chose a direction – one that headed out from the center of Sereitei and toward the mountains – and headed that way. Although it was still early, a few Shinigami were up and about, and those who passed him stopped to bow politely and wish him good morning. He returned their greetings, sometimes exchanging small talk, before letting them on their way and continuing to walk.
He found the calm, lonely place he was looking for when he was atop the green mountains. There were small drops of dew on the blades of grass, and small, delicately coloured flowers swayed in the breeze. Smiling contentedly, he knelt down and reached out to one of the flowers, as if to take it between his fingers. However so small was the plant and so thick were his fingers that he unwittingly crushed it instead. He stared glumly at the remains of the flower in his fingers. He began to imagine what it would be like to be the same as everyone else – to look human. Then he would be able to enjoy the flowers.
A sound stole him from his melancholy thoughts. Standing, he trudged over to the origin point of the noise and found two Shinigami. One of them was wearing the blue robes of a student of the Spiritual Arts Academy. The other was a fully fledged Shinigami, and Komamura recognized her as a member of his squad.
Not making a sound, he continued to seal his own reiatsu and watched the two of them from afar.
“You’re just not doing it right!” The seventh squad member was saying. “Hold your arms out straighter, like this,” she thrust her arms out, palms pointed outward. “And speak the incantation more clearly! The clearer you say it-“
“The more powerful it will be, yeah, I know.” The other one nodded, clearly discontented with being instructed in what to do. All the same, he copied the movements of his superior and spoke an incantation.
“Ye lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, the sea barrier surges, march on to the south!” He cried in his most dramatic voice, and then “Way of Destruction thirty-one! Shakkaho!”
For a moment, red energy filled the space in front of his outstretched hands, but it soon withered away and vanished, leaving a disappointed look on the novice’s face.
The Shinigami merely stood, crossed her arms, and shook her head slowly. Seeing this, the trainee whirled at her.
“If you’re so good, show me how to do it!” He commanded “Make your best, most powerful shot! Go on!”
“Fine!”
The Shinigami girl closed her eyes, made the incantation, and yelled out the spell’s name, and fired a massive red blast in Komamura’s direction without realizing he was there. Seeing the blast approaching, he swiftly side-stepped. The energy ball crashed into a tree that stood behind him, and which then creaked uneasily and tilted forward, slowly falling down toward him.
Any other man would have been crushed or dodged the tree, but Komamura, perhaps in the mood to show off, raised a massive hand and simply caught the trunk of the falling tree, stopping it short. With a grunt, he tossed the massive tree to the side where it fell, and then turned back to the Shinigami and her friend, who were gaping. The Shinigami looked distraught.
“Captain Komamura! Gods, what have I done?!” She squeaked. The young trainee, although as shocked as his friend, slowly began to grin at her misfortune. “Captain, please forgive my mishap! I never meant to fire at you! I’ve been careless!” She went on, kneeling pathetically before him.
“That you have.” Komamura agreed, nodding casually. “Perhaps when you next mean to fire a destructive Kido spell, you’ll do the smart thing,” He pointed to his own eye. “And keep your eyes open for aiming.”
“Of course, Captain, Sir, my humblest apologies!”
“Enough.” Komamura grunted “You are forgiven.”The Shinigami’s eyes lit up. The trainee’s face dropped.
“Really Captain?”
“Yes.” He responded, and then half-turned and pointed at the fallen tree. “But when you feel the need to train, find a more open spot. The tree did nothing wrong and yet you have ended its peaceful existence.”The Shinigami looked ashamed, and simply nodded. When Komamura felt a suitable amount of time had passed to let her grieve for the loss of the tree, he spoke again.
“Dismissed.”
The two youths upped and departed, leaving Komamura alone once more. Feeling the breeze ruffle his fur gently as he stood in the long grass, he gazed at the tree and thought back to the flower. If he had been a normal person – like everyone else, his life would have been vastly different. Although he had had his doubts and bore the scars, Komamura realized that he wouldn’t change a thing about himself if he could.
He trudged back up to the mountaintop that overlooked Sereitei, and smiled warmly down at the cluster of buildings. Today was a good morning to start the spring season.
